What is laser engraving?
Laser engraving is a process of using a laser beam to remove material from the surface of a material, leaving a permanent mark or design. The laser beam vaporizes or melts the material, creating a precise and detailed engraving.
Metals, plastics, wood, leather, and glassware are common materials used in the procedure. It is a fast and accurate way to create custom drawings, patterns, and text on various materials.
The colour of a laser engraving depends on the material. Laser engraving machines give a light-coloured mark on materials like metal and plastic. Laser engraving changes the colour of a material by oxidizing or evaporating its surface with a laser, without using paint or ink.
Laser engravers can create marks ranging from microns to millimetres deep. Modifying the laser’s power and speed parameters regulates the depth of the engraving.
Plastic can be engraved to a depth of 2-4mm, and Laser engrave metal parts can reach a depth of 0.5-2mm, It is depending on the material strength and power of the laser engraving machine.
A laser engraver directs a laser beam onto the material’s surface. The energy the material receives causes it to heat up and vaporize or melt. Most laser engravers give room for adjusting the depth and intensity of the engraving. You can achieve this by altering the power laser beam and the speed.
As technology advances, laser engraving continues to increase its industrial applications. Fiber laser technology for metal engraving is one of the common industrial applications.

The Difference Between Laser Engraver & Laser Cuter?
Laser cutters and laser engravers are virtually identical machines. The main difference is in the power of their laser and the materials they can work with.
Laser engravers have a weaker laser intended only for engraving. However, it is possible to modify the laser engraver to act as a laser cutter. Setting it too low speeds and high laser intensity will cut wood, paper, and some plastics.
Laser cutters, on the other hand, have a much more powerful laser that can both engrave and cut materials. Naturally, laser cutters cost more than engravers. Their CO2 lasers and fiber lasers are higher in price and also require higher technical skills to operate.
If your main purpose is to personalize die-cut items or engrave keychains, bookmarks, and simple models, a laser engraver is for you. A laser cutter is an ideal choice when custom designs need to be cut and a full range of laser cutting and engraving capabilities are required.
Laser engraving and cutting are versatile and affordable options that can take your branding efforts to the next level. Get in touch with us at Merakology to discover the full range of possibilities for laser engraving in South Africa.
